Anderlecht centre back Cheikhou Kouyate has admitted that he held discussion with Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger this summer before rejecting a move to North London, Sky Sports report.

The Senegalese rock of a defender attracted many admirers during the transfer window after his excellent progression for the Belgian champions last season but it seems the 22-year-old remains loyal to the club that gave him a chance.

Kouyate explained how the supporters and recent Champions League qualification to the group stage; where Anderlecht will play Milan, Malaga and Zenit; were the main factors behind him staying.

“The fans of Anderlecht asked me to stay for the club and they showed me their appreciation,” Kouyate told the African press.

“Qualifying for the Champions League was also very important for me, because without that I think I should have been in London where I had a good contact with Arsene Wenger and Arsenal.”
